Describe the theft and check the precautions required
Theft cover is not identical to cover for an unexplained disappearance. A policy may require you to report the incident, provide a crime reference and explain how the phone was kept secure. EE’s published exclusions include specified circumstances in which a device was left where other people could see it but its user could not. Read your own wording rather than treating that example as a rule shared by every insurer. When making a claim, give a factual account of where the handset was and when you discovered it missing. Preserve the evidence available and avoid adding details that you did not witness or cannot substantiate.
Follow the network and account-security steps in the right order
Notify the network promptly to protect the line, then follow the insurer’s reporting route and document requests. For an iPhone covered by AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss, Apple requires Find My to remain enabled during the claim and says not to remove the device from the account before full approval. That condition is different from preparing a damaged phone for a repair. Keep the police reference, purchase evidence and any network confirmation together so that the same handset is consistently identified. If a claim is declined, request a written decision explaining the relevant term and use the insurer’s complaint procedure if you disagree with its application.
Useful records after a stolen phone is reported
- A clear account of the location, circumstances and time the loss was discovered.
- The police reference and confirmation that the mobile network was notified.
- Evidence identifying the handset without disabling a required account-security feature.
