A UK address is only the start of the eligibility check

Moving to the UK or arriving for a course does not automatically make every domestic phone policy suitable. Insurers can set requirements about residence, age, the address used for the policy and the country where a handset was bought. Protect Your Bubble’s published conditions require an adult UK resident, while other products use their own definitions. Check the eligibility section before entering payment details, and ask how a student’s term-time and permanent addresses should be recorded. Nationality alone does not answer the contractual residence question. Give accurate information and obtain clarification if your stay is temporary or you expect to leave the UK during the period of cover.

An imported phone needs a separate purchase check

Residency and device eligibility are two different tests. Insurance2go says it cannot insure a phone purchased outside the UK, whereas Cover4Insurance describes a UK-SIM condition for phones acquired before moving here within its own product rules. Neither statement should be applied to all insurers. Retain the original receipt, purchase date and device identifier, and ask whether documentation in another language is acceptable. If you are considering travel insurance instead, check whether it is designed for an incoming student and whether the phone benefit meets your needs. A policy offering worldwide trips from the UK may have a different purpose from protection for somebody newly arriving to study.

Clarify these facts before paying

  • Your present residence and expected length of stay in the UK.
  • The country, seller and date of the original handset purchase.
  • The address to which any repaired or replacement device can be sent.
